Service and fatigue: how to keep them apart.
I found at times I would give so much of myself that I would feel worn down, or like I can’t go on. Either I wasn’t doing it in the right spirit, or I was just giving so much I couldn’t sustain. So where is the balance of doing and being, or rather helping and yet still taking care of yourself and those you care about?
This Saturday we’re going deeper than just talking about it. We’ll look at real research on this, including work from Adam Grant, an organizational psychologist at Wharton who’s spent years studying why some people who give wear down, and others don’t.
Here’s some of what we’ll dig into:
– Why it’s not really about how much you give
– Why the exact same job, the exact same shift, can wear one person down and not another
– When it’s actually healthier to bring someone else in, instead of carrying it all yourself
– Why “fill your own cup first” might not be quite right, and what the research actually says instead
We are serving, yet still serving ourselves… a healthy balance.
This is for anyone who gives themselves to others, paid or unpaid. Volunteering, nursing, teaching, coaching, caregiving, or just being the one people lean on.
